The RBC Rising Artist Award for 2025 has been awarded to Mi’kmaw of Ktaqmkuk soprano Emma Pennell.
Emma grew up within the small city of South River in Northern Ontario, and says she remembers the timber of the forest as their first viewers. Together with their work as a vocalist and poet, Pennell is an Indigenous activist who appears to create areas for Indigenous voices in music. They co-authored the Indigenous Coverage Paper for the Ontario Universities Scholar Alliance, and based the College of Music Indigenous Management Initiative on the Don Wright College of Music.
