For higher and for worse, Melbourne-based Folks Bitch Trio sound an terrible lot like Julia Jacklin. Whereas the resemblance to Jacklin’s tried-and-true sound makes them instantly accessible, they verge on being a carbon copy of their fellow-Melburnian, making Now Can be a Good Time a “excessive flooring, low ceiling” form of debut album. To paraphrase one YouTube commenter on the “God’s a Totally different Sword” video, “that is a type of [albums] you hear, and also you suppose it may’t be the primary time you’ve heard it.”

Nonetheless, it’s a good debut with memorable lyrics. On opener “God’s a Totally different Sword,” the trio quips, “Can’t deny it my physique retains the rating / However should you inform me that you simply want it / I can rise up off my flooring.” Later, on “Overseas Hen” the road “I noticed a person leap nude and free / Wished you had been there with me / However I wanted it quietly” stands out. Sonically, the album’s strongest efforts are discovered on “Cathode Ray” and “Moth Track,” visitor musician Anita Clark’s violin anchoring the latter’s emotional climax. Finally, your mileage might differ with Now Can be a Good Time, its sound both recent…or a bit worn-out. (www.folkbitchtrio.bandcamp.com)
