(G)I-DLE’s Minnie pre-released a tune from her new album earlier this month and now its title monitor HER has been unveiled as she makes her official solo debut. She’s the fourth member of the group to enterprise out on her personal, and somewhat than reinvent the wheel HER appears like one thing you’d hear on any (G)I-DLE album.
Very similar to Blind Eyes Pink, I’m not the audience for this tune. It’s the most recent in an extended line (infinite, actually…) of “You suppose you know the way superior I’m however you actually don’t” Ok-pop songs — a lyrical conceit so well-trodden it earns an immediate eye roll from me. At this level it simply feels empty, going via the anticipated motions with out precise funding within the idea.
Musically, HER echoes so many western pop tropes of the second. From its vocal quirks to the tender bassline to the atmospheric synth, you can hear this on any world Spotify playlist. This familiarity could assist ingratiate the tune to a large viewers, but it surely doesn’t really feel distinctive to Minnie or Ok-pop as a complete. The refrain is slight and repetitive and the monitor maintains a uninteresting power all through. There’s no sense of modulation or progress, only a thumping remoteness that does Minnie no favors as an artist.
